Agricultural Land Succession Planning Research Report

Succession Planning Option 5 (1)

NEARLY 4 IN 10 U.S. FARMERS PLAN TO TRANSFER OWNERSHIP OF THEIR OPERATIONS WITHIN THE NEXT DECADE.

The high rate of anticipated farm ownership transfers in the coming years highlights a critical period of change for U.S. agriculture.

About half of our respondents have a succession plan in place, and another one-fifth are actively working on one. But those without robust succession plans may face operational disruptions or have their farms fall out of family hands, potentially impacting the agricultural sector.

While farmers overwhelmingly plan for their farm to stay in the family and prioritize steps like identifying a successor and creating a will, smaller farms, livestock operations, and female farmers seem to face real challenges, often lagging in key planning steps like creating trusts and contracts or minimizing taxes.

This report includes not only overall understanding, but breakouts by Generation, Farm Size, Gender, Crop only vs Livestock, Number of Successors, and more.
